  1. What is precision machining?
    Machining is any operation on a material using machinery; some examples include drilling, turning and milling. Precision machining is this process done to fine dimensional tolerances. That means there is little room for error.
  2. What is general machining?
    As above, but dimensional accuracy of the final work piece is less of a concern.
  3. What do you mean by general jobbing?
    We are happy to do general jobbing for you, meaning one-off fabrications as opposed to production type work.
  4. Do Proturn Engineering do light fabrication?
    Yes, we are always willing to take on light fabrication work, just a few examples are rod handler parts for exploration drilling rigs, conveyor pully’s, v. pully’s.
  5. What is fabrication machining?
    They will build machines and structures using machining. For example, they might use cutting, drilling and joining to make you a toolbox.
  6. What is horizontal machining?
    The machining of components that cannot be done in a lathe or milling machine.
  7. What does milling mean?
    There are two types of milling machines, vertical and horizontal. It is a machine tool that is used to shape metal and other solid materials.
  8. What is centre lathe machining?
    Lathe machining is a type of precise machining on hard materials. Lathe turning is a process where a material (mostly metals) are rotated at high speed and shaped by a sharp tool which cuts away at it.
  9. What does drilling mean?
    Drilling is the process of cutting or enlarging holes in solid materials using a drill bit and a drill. Depending on the size of the hole, the material and the number of holes affects the different tools and methods that are used for that particular exercise.
  10. What does welding mean?
    Welding is when the metal machine parts are assembled together. The parts are melted down and a filler is added, once cooled it forms a strong join.
  11. Do you do machining of industrial items?
    Yes we do machining of industrial items such as pumps, pump impellers and pump shafts.
  12. Do you do refurbishment?
    Yes, we refurbish pump housings, impellers and shafts.
